Games for learning and teaching English as a Second Language

Math Motivation

There are many different approaches to teaching elementary math to students. Often teaching fractions or teaching decimals to the students can be seen as one of the hardest areas to master, but teaching equivalent fractions is often seen as equally difficult. For this reason, many teachers have tried different approaches to bring their young charges to understanding and liking math. There have been a number of strategies employed but they all seem to focus on the idea that leaning needed be treated less seriously although it certainly is a serious undertaking.

Often elementary math games are the way to go here, and the best of these are the ones that get the students acquainted with each other before you move into the more serious business of elementary math games. At first, try to pick a game that doesn’t involve anyone speaking or standing in front of a group. One of the best of these that helps the teachers get to know a little something about the personalities of their students is called the adjective game. This game consists of the children giving out their first names only followed by an adjective that best describes their mood that day. So, someone who names themselves Marvelous Marvin will more than likely denote a student that likes to school and will be willing to participate in the elementary math games later.

After all the guidelines have been set in place and you’ve made it clear to all the students what you expect of them in the way of cooperation and decorum, it’s time to select from a variety of math games that will help them with their mathematical endeavors. Remember here that it’s an old axiom that younger children learn much faster and retain more when they’re having fun as they learn. It’s important to make sure that the students see that teachers sincerely care about them, have something valuable to teach them, and won’t allow anyone to make fun of them for making mistakes. The Internet is a valuable resource for getting ideas for fun elementary math games that children can use.

One final word on motivation. Students by and large suffer from a variety of problems that attack their motivation. These issues include bad aptitudes, overcrowded classrooms, no support from home and peer pressure that make it seem cool to do badly. For the most part, the teacher committed to their chosen profession ignores these issues and tends to look at their student’s mind as a fertile garden that he or she can plant ideas and motivations in.  For the most part, the best teachers are motivated themselves to plant nothing but large positive thoughts in the minds of all their students.

It’s a good idea to voice your confidence in the classroom setting so that your confidence in them transfers to them and stays with them for all of the school year.
